A few months ago I was completely frustrated with my hair. I grew up with amazing cuts and color that women my mother’s age longed for. At some point in high school my hair dresser lost her touch & I started my search for a new salon to call home. I would find somewhere & be happy but not in love. I thought I found a salon to call home towards the end of high school, but towards the end of my freshman year of college I went in for thin light brown-caramel highlights (my hair was a very dark brown at the time) and left with thick, bleach blonde highlights. Worse than the color was the burnt scalp & fried hair.
That was 5 years ago, and in my travels I have had the good, the bad & the mediocre. I was at a salon I liked about a year ago, but there was no price list & every time I went in the price was some new crazy amount. I felt like the stylist was charging me based on an impending vacation or AMEX bill. After days of internet searches I found a new salon in my area & I am home!
Substance Salon in Lyndhurst, NJ is lower Bergen’s best kept secret! They opened last year & when I walk in I feel like I’m in SoHo. They display work from the Newark Museum & fresh cut flowers are always at the front desk. Lucky for me I had an appointment for color, cut & blowdry today.
Manny, the owner made my morning with bringing over a chocolate creme brulee espresso! Something I would have never thought to make or ask for? Not in a million years, but I may need one to kick off my day for the rest of my life! Kristy, my stylist, is a genius. I came in totally confused about what I wanted. I told her if it was up to me I’d have black hair to the middle of my back, but with my skin tone black is no option. As long as I’ve been there she’s been doing reds since it makes my skin glow & after breaking out some hair magazines we found the perfect color. After amazing color, a glaze & blow-dry I had my first dry cut.
I am no narcissist–not by any stretch of the imagination–but I look HOT! I could totally turn on Photo booth & snap a few pictures, but they are using me for a bridal showcase next week. Now, take a picture at 10:30 after a full day or take some after being primped for hours? I’ll post pics after the showcase with the best up-do & perfect makeup by Christina Lempesis the Salon Make up artist uses Motives Cosmetics.
